An automatic garage door may be quickly bypassed because all doors are legally required to have an emergency release grab handle.
Crooks can easily snake a coat hanger between the top of the door and the garage upper wall. The coat hanger hooks the release mechanism, and a good yank disengages the garage door. Once in the garage, they close the garage door, and open or break through the house door.
A simple fix will secure your automatic garage door. Use a zip-tie or wire to secure the locking arm. This prevents the handle from releasing. The zip-tie may be best because a stiff tug on the release cord will break the plastic tie to allow the door to be opened manually when necessary.
