Speed Painting – Cutting In Like a Pro, No Tape

Cutting in painting without tape is a technique that can be used to create a sharp, clean edge between two different colors of paint, without the need for painter’s tape. It is a skill that requires some practice, but it can be mastered with a little patience and care.

Use a good quality angled sash brush. This type of brush is designed for cutting in and painting trim, and it will give you more control over the paint.

Load the brush lightly with paint. You don’t want the brush to be dripping, but you do want enough paint on it to create a good line. Start at the top and work your way down. This will help to prevent you from accidentally dripping paint on the area you have already painted.

Use a steady hand and smooth strokes. Don’t try to rush the process. It is better to take your time and get a clean line than to try to go too fast and end up with a messy edge. If you make a mistake, don’t panic. Simply wipe away the excess paint with a damp cloth and try again.

Dip the brush into the paint and tap off the excess on the side of the can.

Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the surface you are painting.

Place the brush on the edge of the surface and gently pull it towards you, creating a sharp line.

Overlap the previous stroke slightly as you work your way down the edge.

Be careful not to overload the brush with paint, as this can cause drips.

Once you have finished cutting in, you can roll or brush on the paint to the rest of the surface.
